Honestly
I was appalled on how a seemingly easy plot and storyline could be
completely ruined. For starters there was little character development
for Starr and the family of Starr and that played a large role in my
dislike for this movie. Starr has 3 monologues and the weakest monologue
was at the grand jury hearing on whether or not they would indict the
officer for the shooting. That was probably the reason why the officer
was acquitted. For a movie that I assumed was supposed to uplift the
black community it did an awful job of doing it. For starters I would
assume that a movie where a Caucasian officer kills a black teenager the
movie would paint the Caucasian to be the antagonist but once again I
was wrong. Instead of making the officer seem like the bad guy they
managed to make King or the leader of a drug gang the antagonist.
Everyone in Garden Heights was happy when King got arrested even though
the teenager still did not get any justice for his death. I mean one of
the major parts in the movie was after the riot when the child pulls a
gun on King to further remind us that black on black crime is more
paramount than police brutality although that may be true the trailer
did not display that at all. Aside from the horrible plot there was
times where the writing was obviously forced. One of the scenes I can
specifically remember was when Starr was playing basketball and the ball
was stolen and her Caucasian friend says "treat the basketball like a
piece of fried chicken" not only did that make zero sense but it showed
little creativity by the writers to use a cliche stereotype to display
underlying race relations at a predominantly white high school. I
cringed when I heard that like because of how poorly written it was.
Personally I was extremely offended by this movie and I would not
recommend this movie for anyone but especially anyone apart of the black
community.
SYNOPSIS: Raised in a poverty-stricken slum, a 16-year-old girl named Starr now attends a suburban prep school. After she witnesses a police officer shoot her unarmed best friend, she's torn between her two very different worlds as she tries to speak her truth.
